HABCO BOE will receive a facilities update and discuss SROs

The Habersham County Board of Education will receive an update about the school system’s ongoing facility improvement projects and have a discussion about school resources officers during its work session on Thursday, July 11.

Assistant School Superintendent Patrick Franklin will give an update on the projects that are ongoing and upcoming for the school system. With just weeks before school starts, one update of utmost importance is the progress of the Clarkesville Elementary School’s addition and renovations. The project began immediately after school let out in May of 2023. The project is scheduled for completion prior to school beginning in August.

During last month’s presentation, Franklin told the board members that the project was on schedule and should be completed prior to teachers returning for the new school year.

Director of Elementary Schools Dr. Susan Davis will give a presentation on the implementation of the Early Literacy Act (HB 538). The Act represents a sweeping reform effort to improve the quality of early reading instruction in the state.

The board members will also receive a presentation from HUB of Habersham Executive Director Todd Colwell. According to the organization’s website, HUB of Habersham currently operates in eight Habersham County schools, focusing on supporting the community’s youth. Its vision is to eventually operate in every school.

Director of School Safety Murray Kogod will discuss the school resource officers with the board members at the work session.

Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Nancy Rennels was unable to provide additional information. She said she had not received everyone’s presentations as of publication.

The Habersham County Board of Education will meet Thursday, July 11 at 4:30 p.m. for its work session. The meeting will be held in the Board Meeting Room at 144 Holcomb Street in Clarkesville.
